Chicago Half Marathon

Today was my first time running The Chicago half marathon and it was fun, chaotic, hot, and tiring.

Let me start by saying I liked the training schedule that I had for this run, but it was also the first and only training schedule I’ve ever had. When training for this I ran into issues at miles 10, 11, and 12 where I had to stop because I felt tired. Today was no different. I started the race focusing on my pace, keeping it slow and consistent. When I got to a water station, I purposely kept my feet moving, trying not to stop. As I approached the 7thmile I needed to hydrate as the heat got to me. This is when I ran into a wall. I was able to push through to the 8th but had to slow down and occasionally stop. My legs and knees were fine, but I felt tired. I continued to the 10thmile where things took a turn for the worse. There was a Bio freeze station where they sprayed your legs down allowing you to get some pain relief. Not knowing any better, I asked one of the techs to spray my shoulder/neck where I felt pain. Instantly I felt a burning sensation all over my neck and shoulders. I tried to wipe it off, but it wouldn’t stop. I used parts of my shirt and rubbed my neck hoping to get the Bio freeze off, but it didn’t work. I finally ran to a water station where used the water to stop the pain. This clearly affected my run making it harder for me to stay on pace.

GG#4 gave me a slight head-high at the start of the race. I tried to time this correctly because in the past I have taken it too early. The hit felt smooth and made me cough.

I knew I was going to feel dry mouth, so I brought water and gum with me in hopes it would help. My mind felt focused for about 5 or 6 miles, but this could have been the runner’s high and not the weed. I felt relaxed and calm feeling a little pain in my right knee. I did feel some anxiety at the start of the race.

“Keep moving those feet and keep trying to improve.”
